Letterbox Love (41) They're Back!

Letterbox Love is a meme hosted by Lynsey @ Narratively Speaking for UK based book bloggers to showcase the books that they’ve received each week.

I'm so happy to be bringing back book hauls to the blog this week! Back in May I explained that I wouldn't be doing them for a while whilst we were decorating and my books were everywhere and now we're all done and my books are back together again on my gorgeous new bookcases. I won't be showing everything I've got since May because that would be ridiculous so instead I'll be starting fresh with the books I've bought and received over the last two weeks.

Us by David Nicholls (For Review)
One Day is one of my all time favourite books and I've been waiting and waiting for another David Nicholls book for years. The wait is finally over and I was thrilled to find that the publisher had sent me a signed copy!
Talon by Julie Kagawa (ARC, Borrowed)
I'm borrowing this one from my lovely friend Jasprit which reminds me that I really need to get to it soon as Rach is waiting to borrow it next! Kagawa's books tend to be hit or miss with me but this one has DRAGONS so we'll see how I get on with it.
My True Love Gave to Me edited by Stephanie Perkins (For Review)
Our gorgeous UK cover, Christmas and several of my favourite authors. I'm freaking excited you guys! I'm waiting until November before making a start on this one.
I Was Here by Gayle Forman (Proof, For Review)
When this dropped through my letterbox earlier today I got some very worried looks from my family because I was squawking and flapping my arms about like a seagull. This is one of my most anticipated 2015 releases and I'm so made up to have a proof copy! I don't think I'll be able to wait long before starting this.

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson (Bought)
I have wanted to read one of Sanderson's books since forever and I've almost bought one so many times. I believe this is a new YA series from him and so I decided to finally, finally give him a go.
Ashes to Ashes by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian (For Review)
This is another book where my inner seagull was out in full force! I love this series and am so excited to see how everything ends. I'll be reading this one very soon.
Sublime by Christina Lauren (For Review)
I hadn't originally heard of this book until the publisher emailed me about it and based on the synopsis alone I decided to give it a go! Although I have to say after some research I much prefer the US cover.

This Autumn I have been on such a thriller kick and it all started when I read Gone Girl last month. Since then I've been straying away from my review pile once a week and diving into a thriller. I've got a little pile that I've been working my way through which has made for perfect October reading. I'm currently reading and enjoying Before I Go To Sleep and if you have any recommendations for what I should pick up after I've finished these three I'd love to know!
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (Bought)
The Girl With All The Gifts by M. R. Carey (Bought)
The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes (Bought)

As always thank you to the lovely publishing folk for the review copies. If you decided to do a Letterbox Love, Book Haul, IMM, Showcase Sunday, Mailbox Monday or whatever else featuring the books you got this week leave me a link as I’d love to check out your books too! ^_^

 Happy reading till next time!

Review for Rooms by Lauren Oliver

Rooms by Lauren Oliver
Publisher: Hodder and Stoughton
Release: 25th September 2014
Genre: Fiction, Ghosts
Source: Received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:
"Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family-bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna-have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself-in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide-with cataclysmic results."

Review
Rooms is Lauren Oliver’s first venture into Adult Fiction and is a book I’ve been looking forward to all year. From our creepy UK cover to the promise of a ghost story I was really looking forward to diving into this one this Halloween season. Turns out that Rooms isn’t your typical ghost story. It’s not the spooky read I was anticipating and at first I was a little disappointed about that but before long I started to appreciate this book for what it is: a sombre and thought provoking look at the pasts that haunt all of us and keep us from moving on.

Rooms has a large cast of characters both living and dead. With so many characters and short chapters flitting from person to person it did take me a while to settle into the story and get a feel for the characters.

What really impressed me with Rooms was Lauren Oliver’s unique take on ghosts. From the way the old house would become the physical body for the spirits to inhabit to the way their conversations would translate to the living as a creak of a floorboard or the opening of a door. As with her YA books Lauren Oliver’s writing creates the perfect atmosphere for her story, this time she takes on a moody literary voice that will echo through your mind long after the final sentence providing a ghostly encore to Rooms itself.

At the beginning of the book it appears that the connections between the characters are down to the big old house and their individual unhappiness but as the story unfolds one layer at a time you see how expertly Lauren Oliver has crafted her story with one thread overlapping with another to create an entangled web of loss, secrets and bitterness. By the end of the book the whole story has come together. My only complaint is that I felt some characters got a more satisfactory ending than others and I would have liked more closure regarding some things.

Although Rooms wasn’t the ghost story I was expecting it was one I appreciated for its originality and thought provoking look at the things that truly haunt us.

Letterbox Love (34) A Rambling and Lengthy Catch-Up!

Letterbox Love is a meme hosted by Lynsey @ Narratively Speaking for UK based book bloggers to showcase the books that they’ve received each week.

Wow, it has been almost a month since I last did one of these! I honestly don't know where that time has gone and why I'm only just getting around to posting a Letterbox Love now except that my weekends have been pretty busy lately and I'm trying to spend less money on books to save for Christmas. Yes I said the C word. Yes it's only October. You're going to have to deal with it because I am a huge fangirl for Christmas time! I started buying presents this week and the general anticipation of it all has started to kick in for me which reflects in this haul because I have some very exciting Christmas books to share with you. The C word aside with all the time that's passed it is entirely possible that I'm missing some books out. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is the case but I can't for the life of me remember what I've left out. Alas, these are the books that I REMEMBER acquiring over the past month. Let us begin.

 For Review

Panic by Lauren Oliver (Proof Copy)
A thousand happy dances for your new book Ms Oliver! I seriously want to read it RIGHT THIS SECOND however it's not out until March and so I'm going to try and resist until at least January. Maybe.
Crash into You by Katie McGarry (ARC)
Oh, Isaiah. I just want you to be happy! I need you to be happy in this book or else me and you are going to have words young man. WORDS! *Stares at book in a firm manner*
Impostor by Susanne Winnacker (Proof Copy)
I had no idea that this one was being published in the UK and had the US version on my wishlist and so when the publisher asked me if I wanted a review copy I was all "hell yeah!" and now I have one, and now I have to wait until January to read it because yeah, again, 2014 titles *sighs.*
The Dark Inside by Rupert Wallis (Proof Copy)
Another 2014 title that is going to be sitting staring at me on my shelf until next year. I'll put my hands up and say that I don't know too much about this one but I do know that the publishers are pretty excited about it and that Rupert's writing has been compared to the beauty that is Patrick Ness' so I have high hopes!

 More For Review...

A Gift to Remember by Melissa Hill
And here we start with the pretty Christmas books! And what better book to start with than with Melissa Hill and her story of Christmas and Books and New York and Bookshops? This sounds like my dream story and I love Melissa Hill so I'm hugely looking forward to reading this one next month!
Calling Mrs Christmas by Carole Matthews
Another Christmas book, another gorgeous cover! I read my first Carole Matthews this summer and really enjoyed it so I'm looking forward to trying out another one of her books. This one is about an unemployed woman who sets up her own Christmas business for wrapping presents, writing cards, decorating trees and the like. Sounds like a festive treat!
It Felt Like a Kiss by Sarra Manning (Proof Copy)
I'm a huge fan of Sarra's YA Contemporary books but have yet to read one of her Chick-lit novels so I'm really excited to give 'It Felt Like a Kiss' a go. Although this is another 2014 proof copy that I want to read NOW but which I'm going to have to save until January. Also the cover is GORGEOUS!
Finding It by Cora Carmack
This is irksome because I REALLY want to start this series and have been sent the first and now the third book for review BUT I HAS NO SECOND BOOK!!! Looks like this series is going to have to wait until I can hunt me down a copy of Faking It.

 Bought/Gifted

Christmas at the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan
Ellie! Ellie! I found it! Ellie found this one in her The Works a couple of weeks ago and I was mega jealous because I love me some Jenny Colgan and I couldn't find one in my store! Then I was in there on Tuesday and found this ONE copy and I snatched it up and hugged it tight. Okay, so I haven't actually read the first Cupcake Cafe book yet - but I own it! And I love Jenny Colgan! And this hardback was only £2.99 when the new paperback is more expensive and so it just made sense for me to buy it.
Sweetly by Jackson Pearce
Whilst I was in The Works I found this copy of Sweetly. I have a proof copy and was mulling over replacing it for the bargain £1.99 that the paperback was. The big deal breaker was when I noticed whilst I was flicking through it that I had been quoted inside! I didn't know this! Of course I couldn't leave without a copy after that.
Ashfall by Mike Mullin
I have had my eye on this one for years and so was really eager to see what Ellie thought when she was reading it to determine whether it should go on or off my wishlist for good. Turns out she loved it (check out her review here) and very kindly sent me her copy. I think this might make a good Halloween read so it's on the pile and I'm hoping to get around to it.
The Killing Woods by Lucy Christopher (Proof Copy)
I have a confession. I wasn't the biggest fan of Stolen *ducks and hides.* Still, this one sounded really interesting to me and like it would make a good Halloween read. I think I might have read somewhere that it deals with PTSD as well which has piked my interest further as I've been diagnosed with that myself. Anyway I wanted to read it but was reluctant to actually buy a copy and so my day was made when the lovely Amber sent me her proof copy! I'm hoping that I'll get around to this one for Halloween and that I'll enjoy it more than I did Stolen.

That's all from me! And I apologise for the rather long ramblyness of this post. If you read it all and didn't skim read then a big "Aww shucks!" and a hearty hug to you. Needless to say it looks like there will be some brilliant reading in store for me!

Review for Red Hill by Jamie McGuire

Red Hill by Jamie McGuire
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Release: 1st October 2013
Genre: Adult, Apocalyptic, Horror, Survival, Romance, Thriller
Source: Received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Review
Jamie McGuire is the international bestselling author of New Adult sensation Beautiful Disaster. Although Beautiful Disaster doesn’t really appeal to me I have been interested in checking out this author and so when I heard about Red Hill which sounded more up my street I was eager to pick it up for an early Halloween read. I’m so glad that I did because I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting it to be…

Going into Red Hill I didn’t know much about it other than it’s an adult apocalyptic novel about a deadly epidemic. I picked it up expecting a horror full of death and gore and although I got that to some extent it was also so much more than that. At its heart Red Hill is a survival story that takes a look at humanity and how hardship tends to bring out the very best and the very worst in us as humans. It demonstrations our strength and how quickly we adapt as a species to change and shows that when everything is stripped away what we live for and what keeps us going is love and hope. Even if you’re not usually a fan of horror I would still recommend giving this book a chance as the apocalypse is really just the trigger to the story setting up a series of events in the characters’ lives. The story is about what happens from that moment on and it read more like a contemporary novel compared to anything else.

The book is narrated by three different characters that begin the book as strangers but gradually their stories intertwine. Scarlet’s story begins as a nurse and watching the epidemic sweep through what starts as an ordinary day at the hospital was a fascinating narrative to read from. As the hospital overflows with this unusual illness Scarlet knows something is very wrong and flees to find her daughters who are staying with their dad for the weekend. Next we have Nathan whose wife decides to leave him and their daughter on the day that the epidemic hits and then we have Miranda a college student who’s driving her sister and their boyfriends to spend the weekend at their dad’s home on the secluded ranch Red Hill. I loved having the different narrations as not only did it keep the story snappy and fast paced but I also loved seeing the outbreak from all the different vantage points and watching the characters stories overlap. As the epidemic spreads you can feel the characters desperation and panic rise which made Red Hill a nail biting read.

As well as our three main characters there is a wide range of secondary characters and I loved each and every one of them! They’re all smart, strong, and compassionate and they grow and change throughout the novel meaning that my favourites were constantly shifting as well although I’d have to say that overall Scarlet, Nathan, Zoe and Cooper held a special place in my heart. However this is an apocalyptic novel and so of course it’s a given that not everyone will survive. My heart broke at several points during this book and I was in a state of constant fear for the characters’ lives. Red Hill is an intense read!

Overall I’d recommend Red Hill to pretty much anybody whether you’re a fan of apocalyptic horror novels or not. I’d especially recommend this book to fans of The Walking Dead, the movie Contagion or Tracey Garvis Graves novel ‘On The Island’ as the writing style struck me as very similar as did the story of survival with a dash of romance. Red Hill is a fascinating look at humanity and endurance and is a nice, solid, standalone novel that would make a perfect Halloween read!

The Scary and Supernatural – My Top Picks for Halloween Reading 2012!

So this is my third year doing one of these posts now because you guys seem to love them so much! I love seasonal reading and love reading spooky books for the build-up to Halloween. So here is a selection of my most recommended scary books for the season which have all been read and loved by me. I’ve also included a FEAR FACTOR scale so you can find the right level of scares for your taste!

Fear Factor
High – Is someone behind me? What’s that noise? Sleeping with the lights on scary!
Medium – Oooh okay this is some scary stuff I…oh wait is that candy? Mediocre scares.
Low - Oh man I wish my Halloween had as much spooky fun as this! Mild Halloween reading for those easily spooked.

Frost by Marianna Baer
So I read Frost last Halloween and it was probably the scariest out of the bundle I read and one of the most scariest YA books I’ve ever read. This is the kind of Halloween story that I love where you’re not sure if it’s really happening or if this is all going on in the main characters head, plus its set in a creepy old boarding school which sets the mood perfectly! This is a psychological thriller that’s sure to keep you guessing until the end. Fear Factor = High
This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers
I just had to have a zombie apocalypse novel on this list and this is the best one I’ve read. This Is Not A Test feels to me like the most realistic account of a zombie apocalypse and is surprisingly more desolate and haunting than action packed and gory which I found really refreshing. This is a chilling and beautifully written glimpse into a terrifying future. Fear Factor = High
Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
I read this one earlier this year and whilst I was reading I couldn’t help but wish I’d saved it for Halloween! This is a terrifying ghost story about a powerful ghost called Anna Dressed in Blood nicknamed because her dress drips with the blood of her victims. This is a ghost story like no other that I absolutely loved.
Fear Factor = High
Unrest by Michelle Harrison
Because this is another ghost story I was going to choose between this or Anna to post about, but I couldn’t decide between them! They are both excellent, brilliantly scary, and entirely different from one another so I thought I’d include them both. You can never have too many ghost stories on Halloween right? This one literally chilled me to the bone the concept is so unique and creepy!
Fear Factor = High
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
I actually can’t say too much about this one without ruining the plot, but if you read the synopsis and aren’t intrigued I will eat my hat! This one had me hooked from the first chapter. I’ve actually ordered the sequel and hope it will be here in time for Halloween, I’m hoping to squeeze it in to my reading pile! Fear Factor = Medium
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
This list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include a vampire book and I’m not talking cutesy will fall in love with you vampires either but the blood thirsty won’t hesitate to rip your throat out kind! Julie Kagawa takes vampires back to how they’re supposed to be in this high stakes immortal future where vampires rule over humans. Fear Factor = Medium
Slated by Teri Terry
Following on from The Immortal Rules this is another one for you dystopian fans! This is one of the scariest dystopian books I’ve read about a future government that controls troubled kids by “slating” them a process that wipes them of their memories of who they are and what they’ve done. The plot is highly unique and I found the whole slating process terrifying. Fear Factor = Medium
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
I recently read this one as part of my own Halloween reading this year and it was really creepy! This is the perfect supernatural read for Halloween with an eerie setting, a family of psychics, murder, ghosts and old magic. Maggie’s writing sets the tone for a haunting read. Fear Factor = Low
Sweetly by Jackson Pearce
This is another one I read last Halloween and although it’s not as scary as some of the other books on this list to me it’s one of my favourite’s and I actually regard it as the ultimate Halloween read! This is a re-telling of the fairytale Hansel and Gretel. Candy? Check. Supernatural goings on? Check! Can’t get much more perfect than that! Fear Factor = Low
Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan
I read this one recently and absolutely loved it! This is probably the least scary on the list and is pretty much your typical supernatural read, but the place where its set has that whole small town creepy vibe going on and some scenes are quite haunting and eerie in the way they’re written. Basically if you’re looking for a good paranormal book recommendation, I’d check this one out!
Fear Factor = Low

I hope at least a few of these books have caught your attention and you’d like to check them out for Halloween! As always I’ve provided a link to goodreads for every book so if any have caught your eye and you’d like to learn more simply click on the books title and it will take you to its page for a full synopsis, reviews, and more!

Scary, Spooky and Supernatural – Jess’s top pick’s for Halloween! (YA Edition)

Last year I done a post like this and it was really well received, in fact it’s one of the most viewed posts on my blog! So seems as everyone seemed to enjoy it so much I decided to do another post this year recommending those perfect Halloween reads but this time as a Young Adult edition. Because of this the books aren’t going to be as scary as say a Stephen King book like I picked last year but being a mainly Young Adult book blog I really wanted to focus on that genre this time especially because there are so many fantastic reads to choose from that fit the Halloween period perfectly! Like last year I’m bringing back the Fear Factor scale to help you find the book that has the right level of terror for you! All of these Halloween picks have been read by me and come highly recommended, only the best of the best for my readers!

Fear Factor
S-cream your pants scary! – Is someone behind me? What’s that noise? Sleeping with the lights on scary.
Terror-ific! – Oooh okay this is some scary stuff I…oh wait is that candy? mediocre scares.
Spook-tastic! - Oh man I wish my Halloween had as much spooky fun as this! Mild Halloween reading for those easily scared.

The Long Weekend by Savita Kalhan
This is probably the scariest YA book that I’ve read. The Long Weekend is the story of two friends who get kidnapped and taken to a huge house far out in the middle of nowhere. What makes this so scary is the reality that these things happen in real life. An edge of your seat thriller.
Fear Factor = S-cream your pants scary!

The Lying Game by Sara Shepard
Don’t be fooled by this book’s pretty, girly, cover! This is the ultimate girly Halloween read centered around a group of the meanest girls. But are they capable of murder? This one had me looking over my shoulder!
Fear Factor = S-cream your pants scary!

Soul Beach by Kate Harrison
Another one not to be judged by its cover! This one’s about a social website for the dead that seems to have our main character Alice strangely addicted after receiving an email to visit there to talk to her recently murdered sister. With parts told from the killer’s point of view this is an original and chilling thriller.
Fear Factor = S-cream your pants scary!

Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton
Blood Magic is such an eerie gothic read that’s jam packed with creepy atmospheric scenes. This is a totally original paranormal romance full of dark magic and murder. I loved this book and think it would make a fantastic Halloween read for paranormal lovers!
Fear Factor = S-cream your pants scary!

The Maze Runner by James Dashner
This dystopian book is such a thrill ride of a read and up there as one of my favourite dystopians. This has lots of death and scares in this frightenly believable future perfect for fans of The Hunger Games.
Fear Factor = Terror-ific!

The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong
This is the perfect paranormal read for Halloween as its chock full of several different paranormal creatures. These kids aren’t your typical supernatural’s though, genetically engineered and super powerful their creator’s feel like they’ve made a mistake a mistake that can only be resolved by death…
Fear Factor = Terror-ific!

Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon
This is a completely original, gothic, supernatural read with a whole new take on a brand new supernatural creature. This book is set in a gothic boarding school that studies the dead language of Latin amongst other strange things. A captivating gothic love story.
Fear Factor = Terror-ific!

Haunting Violet by Alyxandra Harvey
Haunting Violet is the perfect historical ghost story. Violet’s never believed in ghosts after spending her life working for her fraudulent medium mother but with a murder mystery going on, and the murdered girl in question haunting her Violet will have to start believing in ghosts because they believe in her.
Fear Factor = Terror-ific!

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
This book is definitely a more fun Halloween read what with loveable and girly heroine Evie. Don’t be fooled by Evie’s girly exterior and pink Taser though this girl can seriously kick some ass and has to as it’s her job to keep the paranormal creatures in line and protect humans but with her unique powers which category fits Evie? Human or supernatural?
Fear Factor = Spook-tastic!

Velvet by Mary Hooper
Velvet is a gorgeous historical ghost story set in the Victorian/Edwardian period when spiritualism was at its peak. This is a fascinating read that takes an in depth look into the medium and spiritual craze, are the ghostly encounters Velvet is witnessing fake? Or the real deal?
Fear Factor = Spook-tastic!

To find out more about any of these books click on the title and the link will take you to the books page on goodreads for a synopsis, reviews, and more information.

So there you have it my recommended Halloween reading! I hope some of you decide to check these out for some spooky reading and whatever you’re doing this Halloween- whether it’s trying to hunt down a hot vampire for the night, or snuggling up with lots of goodies, some films and a book I hope you all have a great time enjoying the most paranormal night of the year!

Fear Factor = Spookylishious The Poisoned House by Michael Ford- A creepy young adult historical fiction novel about a big old house and ghostly goings on. You won’t want to be home alone when you’re reading this one! Fear Factor = Spookylishious Night World: Bind-up Books 1-3 by L J Smith- If you’re a lover of all things supernatural this is a great book to read this Halloween. Three short stories about vampires, werewolves and witches this is the ideal book to pick up if you’re in the mood for the creatures that go bump in the night. Fear Factor = Tiny Terror The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan- Everybody loves a good zombie book and I’d definitely recommend this one to dystopian fans. Apocalyptic zombie fun because sometimes the scariest reads of all are the ones that really could happen someday. Fear Factor = Tiny Terror And lastly Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead- For those who dream of snuggling up next to a sexy vampire this Halloween I’d recommend Vampire Academy. By far my favourite vampire series this has plenty of action and romance to keep the vampire lovers satisfied this Halloween. Fear Factor = Tiny Terror
